WATER4KPEDZE OVERVIEW

Kpedze-Sreme, commonly known as Salama, is a town in the Ho West Municipal Assembly of the Volta Region of Ghana. It lacks much-needed access to clean water, which has an impact on their daily life. The majority of the people in the community do not have access to a dependable communal water supply that is safe to drink. Currently, drinking water is obtained from River Tale, which is an untreated water source that does not meet drinking water quality standards.

Cleanearth is looking to provide technical and fundraising efforts required in the construction of a clean water distribution system to the Kpedze Sreme community, with the support of the local community and their Chief.

OUR PILOT PROGRAM - #WATER4KPEDZE

There are more than 2.1 billion people who lack access to safely managed drinking water, and that metric includes the 8000 people of the Kpedze Sreme community. Women and girls are the major water transporters in houses and schools when water is required. Women in Kpedze may trek up to 2.5 kilometers to obtain water from a cleaner but untreated spring water source. This water-related time loss translates to decreased productivity in the educational and economic activities of the women in this community. “We are in dire need of water, because of the [accessibility] of water, our children are always late for school”, said Rosemary, the Women Community Leader.

The health and well-being of the people in the community is also impacted with a high risk of waterborne diseases due to the water quality. The Opinion Leader in the community, Nelson, explained that “sometimes people suffer from bilharzia when they have to depend on the stream”. The general occupation of Kpedze-Sreme is small-scale farming, money is frequently expended on medical bills due to illnesses from “untreated water that they drink every now and then”, said Nelson. Cleanearth Scientific believes in local community led solutions and our approach is to leverage our expertise to refine already existing interventions when they exist. With your support, this project can be completed and everyone within the community will have access to safe drinking water.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We plan to develop a modular system to meet the expanding needs of the Kpedze community in lieu of municipal intervention which we refer to as the first phase.

Breakdown:

  • Install a water treatment system for raw water sourced from Mountain Spring – River Lafie.
  • Lay supply and distribution pipes to communal water point – three standpipes.
  • Train local team to maintain and handle water ATM.

Further description of treatment system available on request.
